PANTERA™ ACTUATORS

BLAC INC. Pantera™ Series hydraulic power and control (HPCU) units are designed for both modulating and on-off applications.

Pantera may be used for linear thrust or quarter turn torque and provides consistent reliability through its product strength and durability.

The wide functionality of Pantera allows for use in virtually any application or environment with considerable options and arrangements available.

Basic HPCU Design includes Motor/Pump assembly, Control Manifold and Reservoir

Basic HPCU Design

The Standard HPCU includes the motor/pump assembly, reservoir, and core control manifold components.

Optional Features—such as failsafe solenoids, accumulators for critical or emergency services, and provisions for hand pump or handwheel operation—can be added to meet specific application requirements.

Click on the Basic HPCU Design button for a 360° look at the standard Pantera HPCU.

  • Complete hydraulic package is assembled into a single compact unit.

  • May be designed for modulating or on-off applications and for linear or quarter turn valves.

  • Pantera HPCU may be mounted directly to the cylinder or located remotely with hose connections.

  • Reservoir can be removed quickly for ease of maintenance.

Direct or Remote Mounted HPCU

The actuator cylinder may be direct or remote mounted to the hydraulic power and control unit (HPCU).

The direct mounted HPCU is shown for a typical linear actuator and also for a Sulzer valve in a Power Plant startup valve application.

Remote mounting is typically accomplished with hoses as shown with this linear valve actuator.

Refer to Linear Thrust and Quarter Turn Torque for sizing information.

Rotary Application

Rotary or quarter turn applications may use the Pantera self-contained design.

The unit shown has the electrical enclosure mounted with the system for operations to view the command and position feedback indication of the rotary device.

Refer to Rotary Stroke Sizes for available sizes.

Pantera Custom Design for Unique Application

Strength and Versatility

The strength of design and durability of components make Pantera a prime candidate for many Power Generation and Refining needs.

However, the versatility of Pantera also allows for its use in unique applications such as this braking system for window cleaning equipment.

Solenoid(s) may be incorporated as needed for a failsafe design. The electronics enclosure for the unit may be mounted near the system or remotely as access allows.

Refer to the Features and Data Sheet for further information.

Pressure Control

Another application for Pantera is pressure control.

A power plant client used the self-contained unit linear actuator for control of its sootblower header pressure downstream of the pressure regulator valve.

For this system, the pressure setpoint is user adjustable at the BLAC INC. valve controller enclosure. The downstream pressure transmitter signal is used as the process variable in the loop.

Using a variable frequency drive (VFD), the setpoint is compared with the process variable to obtain the position error.

The difference in error is corrected at the HPCU with the motor driving the hydraulic fluid one direction or the other to cause a position correction for the PRV.

Pantera Units for Steam Letdown Valves in Power Plant

Multiple Units in Train

Several Pantera self-contained units may be used where a larger system utilizing a single reservoir is not practical.

For this system there is a combined electronics enclosure so that each valve may be monitored by operations from a single location.

The Pantera units shown in this train are for steam letdown valves in a power plant.

Pantera Definitions

Self-Contained Unit – Complete hydraulic package of components assembled as one entity.

Dedicated Unit – Hydraulic assembly of motor, pump, reservoir and hydraulic control valves are assembled, but mounted remotely from the drive cylinder for each valve or damper application. This is also sometimes called a split unit design.

Mechanical Handwheel Positioner – This is the device that permits a geared operation of the valve or damper in manual mode without any hydraulic forces being utilized.

Hydraulic Handpump with Directional Valve – These two components are utilized together to provide manual directional control of the actuator.

Load Holding – This is the capability of the actuator to hold a load without moving through hydraulic valves by utilizing the BLAC INC. design. If the actuator locks in place, load holding is provided to prevent any movement.

On-Off – This control function is when a valve is either driven to open, driven to close, either fully or partially during stroke. The actuator can be operated by either pushbuttons, switches or outputs from plant control system to control valve or damper position.

Modulating – This type of control is continuous and generally operates from a mA signal generated from the plant control system. Also available is modulating control through a modification of the On-Off control where signals are provided to keep the valve position moving as needed.
